WILLIAM C. WARREN III ’45

WILLIAM C. WARREN III, 84, a businessman and community leader in Rochester, N.Y., died Dec. 22, 2006. A member of Psi Upsilon, he served in the US Navy during World War II and returned to Wesleyan, where he received his degree in 1947. He again served in the US Navy during the Korean War. Active in Republican politics, he also served on numerous boards. Predeceased by his wife, Jessica Weis Warren, survivors include three children, five grandchildren, and a sister.

WILLIAM R. WANNEMACHER ’45

WILLIAM R. WANNEMACHER, a music educator, died Mar. 9, 2006, at age 83. A member of Delta Kappa Epsilon, he received a bachelor’s degree from St. Michael’s College and a master’s degree from the State University of New York. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division and was also a member of General Patton’s Third Army in the final drive across Germany. He was the brother of the late Joseph Wannemacher ’41. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Blondin Wannemacher, four children, seven grandchildren, and 15 nieces and nephews, including Joseph A. Wannemacher ’69.

WILLIAM P. THOMPSON ’45

WILLIAM P. THOMPSON, a manufacturer’s representative, died July 17, 2003. He was 80 and had been a member of Delta Tau Delta. A veteran of World War II, he served in the 10th Mountain Division and was wounded in Italy. Among those who survive are his wife of 50 years, Carol Whitcher Thompson, their children, and their grandchildren.

SHERBURNE B. ROCKWELL JR. ’45

SHERBURNE B. ROCKWELL JR., a manager and trustee of the R.C. Taylor Trust, died Feb. 17, 2003. He was 81. A member of Psi Upsilon, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and received a bachelor’s degree from Bentley College. Among those who survive are his wife, Penelope Booth Rockwell, a son, two grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and a brother.

EDWARD M. PORTER JR. ’45

EDWARD M. PORTER JR., a pilot and test pilot with the U.S. Navy, who retired as Commanding Officer of the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, died Mar. 10, 2011. He was 87. A member of Psi Upsilon, after Pearl Harbor he joined the U.S. Navy, where he spent his 33-year career. His wife, Barbara Hale Porter, predeceased him. Survivors include two daughters, one grandson, and several nephews.

JEFFREY NORTON ’45

JEFFREY NORTON, whose lifelong love of books and learning led to a distinguished career in publishing, died suddenly on Sept. 15, 2006, while on vacation in Malta . He was 81. A member of Alpha Delta Phi, he was the son of Ralph Norton of the class of 1903, and the brother of the late Sidney J. Norton ’36 and the late Ralph Norton Jr. ’43. For many years he was editor and editor-in-chief of the McGraw-Hill Book Company college textbook division, as well as the company’s editorial vice president. In the 1970s he started his own company, Jeffrey Norton Publishing, which specializes in foreign language instruction under the Audio Forum name. An avid book collector, he amassed more than 5,000 books on angling that were sold at auction. At the time of his death, he was working on a definitive bibliography of ABC/alphabet books, of which he also had a large collection. Predeceased by a son, Bruce S. Norton ’72, survivors include his wife, Gloria Norton, three sons, a daughter, and six grandchildren.

WILLIAM R. MOLLER ’45

WILLIAM R. MOLLER, a retired trial attorney, died Dec. 1, 2008, at age 83. He was a member of Sigma Nu and received his law degree from the University of Connecticut. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. Formerly town judge for Simsbury, Conn., he was one of the founders of the Wethersfield School of Law, which eventually became the Quinnipiac Law School. He was predeceased by two wives and is survived by his former wife, Jeannette Carrozzella Moller, two sons, three grandchildren, and two sisters, including Mary E. Brower MALS ’70.

RICHARD P. MILLIKEN JR. ’45

RICHARD P. MILLIKEN JR., 83, who was associated with the Allstate Insurance Company for 38 years, died Sept. 22, 2006. He was a member of Chi Psi, served in the US Army Air Forces during World War II, and then returned to Wesleyan, receiving his degree in 1948. Predeceased by his daughter, he is survived by his wife, Frances Alexander Milliken, a son, and two granddaughters.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS MAFFUCCI ’45

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS MAFFUCCI, an attorney who specialized in zoning and land use issues, died Apr. 3, 2002 at age 78. He was a member of Delta Upsilon and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After receiving his law degree from Columbia University, he practiced law for 40 years, wrote several books on zoning and land use, published a Long Island (N.Y.) weekly newspaper, and founded the Rhodes Review, a legal publication analyzing New York State zoning and land use law and property rights issues. He is survived by his wife, Jean Ginocchio Maffucci, three sons, five grandchildren, and a brother.

HENRY C. HERGE SR. ’45

HENRY C. HERGE SR., commanding officer of the Navy College Training Program (V-12) at Wesleyan from 1943–1945 and former dean of the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education, died Mar. 8, 2003. He was 97. The recipient of three degrees at New York University, he also received a doctorate from Yale University and an honorary degree from Wesleyan. Predeceased by his first wife, Josephine Breen Herge, survivors include his wife, Alice Wolfram Herge, two sons, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
