Esslie Hughes ’79

Esslie Hughes '79 was appointed director of the New York office of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. The PCAOB is a private-sector nonprofit corporation created to oversee the auditors of public companies in order to protect the interests of investors and further the public interest in the preparation of informative, fair, and independent audit reports. She previously worked for more than 20 years in commercial banking with The Bank of New York, European American Bank, and Bankers Trust. Hughes received her MBA from the University of Chicago.

Alberto Ibarguen ’66

Alberto Ibarguen '66 was elected president and CEO of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which makes grants to promote excellence in journalism worldwide and invests in the vitality of 26 U.S. communities where the Knight brothers operated newspapers. A newspaper executive since 1984 and currently publisher of the Miami Herald and the Nuevo Herald, he had served in the Peace Corps and holds a law degree from UPenn. Columbia University honored him with their Maria Moors Cabot prize for his work to protect journalists and free speech in Latin America and George Washington University recently awarded him an honorary Ph.D. The foundation chair describes him as "a recognized leader with interests that are a perfect match with those of the foundation." Ibarguen, who served on the Wesleyan board, concurs: "I feel as though my life has been training just for this job."

David Z. Izakowitz ’76

David Z. Izakowitz '76 joined the Charlottesville office of McGuireWoods LLP as a partner in the labor and employment department, focusing on immigration and naturalization law. As an immigration lawyer with 13 years of experience, Izakowitz's practice concentrates on providing services for businesses, as well as assisting clients with audits and inspections by the Departments of Homeland Security and Labor. Izakowitz earned his law degree from Rutgers University School of Law in Newark, N.J., graduating first in his class. He is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and was included in the December 2002 edition of Virginia Business magazine as one of the "Legal Elite" in Virginia for immigration law. His selection was based on the polling of more than 6,000 lawyers.

Frank N. Judson '64, M.D., has been named to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. Selected by Secretary of Health and Human Services, Judson is active in national and international AIDS organizations. He is chairman of the board of the American Social Health Association (ASHA), as well as the president of the International Union Against Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI) for 2003-04. Judson, who received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, is director of the Public Health Department of Denver, Colo., chief of infectious diseases for the Denver Health Medical Center, and professor of medicine and preventive medicine at the University of Colorado. The author or co-author of more than 240 scientific publications, Judson has also been an epidemic intelligence service officer with the CDC.

She has a long record of community involvement and grassroots organizing, as well as business experience in the technology field. She earned her M.B.A. from Stanford and is the founder and president of an international consulting business and author of The Third Century: America's Resurgence in the Asian Era. Kishimoto lives in Palo Alto with her husband and two daughters.

Mark R. Kravitz ’72

Mark R. Kravitz '72, nominated by President Bush to become a U.S. District Court Judge in Hartford, Conn., was confirmed to the bench in June 2003. He is a partner and appellate lawyer at the law firm of Wiggin & Dana in New Haven. Kravitz, who was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, earned his J.D. from Georgetown University and clerked for William H. Rehnquist, chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, from 1978 to 1979. He is an adjunct professor of law at the University of Connecticut and was a visiting lecturer in law at Yale Law School in the spring of 2000.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) announced that it has named John Lippincott '71, MAT '72 (and father of Sarah '07), as president of CASE. Previously, Lippincott served for nearly 12 years as associate vice chancellor for advancement at the University System of Maryland. A College of Letters major, he began his career teaching humanities courses at community colleges in Connecticut, New York, and Oregon.

As they prepared to merge, Travelers Property Casualty Corp. and The St. Paul Companies Inc., named Samuel G. Liss '78 executive vice president of strategic development. He had joined St. Paul as executive vice president of business development in February 2003 and had advised St. Paul on its exit from reinsurance and the formation of Platinum Underwriters Holdings Ltd. last year. Previously, he was a managing director at Credit Suisse First Boston. He pursued graduate studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science and received his master's degree in business administration from New York University.

The chairman of the board noted, "Dan's stewardship of ImClone Systems during one of its most critical and challenging periods has been exemplary," and cited his leadership qualities, management skills, and his experience in finance and the international pharmaceuticals business. Lynch majored in mathematics at Wesleyan and earned a master's in business administration from the Darden Graduate School of Business.

LYNNE MACFARLANE '75 was named vice president of human resources for Jamba Juice, a leader in made-to-order fruit smoothies and freshly squeezed juices. MacFarlane joined Jamba after recently serving as vice president of human resources for The Limited, Inc., the specialty retailer. CEO Paul Clayton noted that MacFarlane, who has 25 years of professional experience, was chosen "not only because of her vast experience in employee relations, organizational development and employee/ performance management, but for her ability to anticipate organization and cultural changes as we enter the next expansion phase. Lynne impressed us as someone who clearly sees the big picture and has the skills to implement systems that will help us achieve the goals shared by everyone at Jamba Juice."
