Ted Oviatt MAT’57
Edward P. Oviatt MAT’57, a teacher and administrator, died Oct. 29, 2017, at age 83. He received his BA degree in French from Williams College and an MAT in French from Wesleyan. After graduating, he worked for the American Field Service and taught English in France for a year. He devoted his life to education, starting at St. Mark’s School in Texas, where he began as a teacher and track and cross-country coach. He became headmaster at the Key School in Maryland at the age of 31, and expanded the school through the 12thgrade. He then became headmaster at Buckley Country Day in New York City, taught at Staples High School in Connecticut, and was headmaster at Oakwood and West Valley Neighborhood schools in California. Before retirement, he spent 20 years teaching at Belmont High School in Los Angeles. In 2001 he moved to the Philippines and worked at schools there. In 2003 he published a book, The Troubled Troublemakers: The harm they do and the help they need, an account of the challenges faced in schools and solutions for success. Among those who survive are his wife, Marilyn Mata Oviatt, six children, and six grandchildren.
